Alabama HB152

What You Need to Know

Alabama Legislature • 2026 Session
Sponsor: Rep. Garrett
Committee: Ways & Means Education
Proposed Effective Date: October 1, 2026

What HB152 Would Do

HB152 would repeal the Alabama state laws that established the School of Social Work of Alabama as a two‑year graduate school within the University of Alabama. This repeal threatens the structural independence that has long supported academic excellence, national visibility, and workforce development for social workers across the state.

PASWHA’s Position

PASWHA strongly opposes HB152.
Here’s why:

“Every public university program ranked higher than UA is an independent, free‑standing school of social work, and this bill puts that independence at risk.

The University of Alabama School of Social Work is the backbone of Alabama social workers. The risks in this bill are clear:

  • Harm to UA’s national standing
  • Potential accreditation vulnerabilities
  • Further destabilization of a workforce Alabama is already struggling to sustain.”

— Rev. Dr. Russell L. Bennett, LGSW, Ph.D.
